Vasantham Central’s New Programme Helps Viewers Cope with Recession

MediaCorp TV12’s Vasantham Central has come up with a new info-educational programme to help viewers beat the recession blues. Called ‘Siruthuli’, this seven-episode series will make its debut on Vasantham Central on Saturday, 6 April 2002 at 7.30pm.

According to Mr Raja Segar, Assistant Vice-President of Vasantham Central, “ We hope that this programme will help people in dealing with the current recession and prepare them for future ones. This is going to be an eye-opener for many who do not really know what recession is all about and could learn a few strategies to cope with it.”

The programme is hosted by Mrs Sarojini Pathmanathan, a HR officer from the Health Promotion Board. She will be joined by Mr Seeni Jaffar, a Business Strategist and host of the TV programme ‘Porulatharathi Purinthukkolvam’. Mr Jaffar has also conducted many talks on MediaCorp Radio’s OLI 96.8FM.

‘Siruthuli’ will feature discussions and analyses by interviewing experts from various organisations who can throw some light on the current recession. Members of the public directly or indirectly affected by the recession due to retrenchments or salary-cuts, are also invited to share their experiences on how these individuals and their families cope with the hard times.

In the debut episode, viewers will be given an introduction to “what is recession and its history”? Professor Thangavelu from the National University of Singapore provides the explanation and facts about recession and its cycle. The episode will also highlight the story of Mr Chockalingam, the father of three kids who was retrenched three months ago. The family became dependent on his wife’s salary of $950 and his mother-in-law’s CPF of $200 per month. We look into the strategies his family has adopted to cope with the situation and the support they have been giving him. ‘Siruthuli’ also helped Mr Chockalingam by introducing him to a CDC as this eventually lead him to getting a job.

On a weekly basis, an expert will be featured in the programme. In the first episode, Mrs Lakshmi Allagappan, an experienced social worker provides a number of suggestions on coping with recession. She also highlights the places where people can turn to for help.

To learn more about the strategies of coping with recession, tune in to Vasantham Central on Saturday, 6 April 2002 at 7.30pm.
