Channel NewsAsia Brings Viewers in Brunei Darussalam An Inside Look At Asia Through KRISTAL TV
Channel NewsAsia, Radio Television Brunei and KRISTAL TV sign a Letter of Understanding
SINGAPORE (30 September 2002) – Asian news and information provider, Channel NewsAsia (International), today signs with Brunei’s RTB and KRISTAL TV a Letter of Understanding on Carriage that further extends its reach into the Sultanate. Beginning 30 September 2002, the people of Brunei Darussalam, through KRISTAL TV, join more than 12 million households and hotels across 16 territories in receiving Channel NewsAsia’s timely and relevant news and information.
“RTB and KRISTAL TV are pleased to play a part in broadening Channel NewsAsia’s reach in Brunei Darussalam. With the channel’s unique offering of up-to-the-minute English news and information, it will give the people of Brunei Darussalam a greater value and choice,” said Pengiran Dato Ismail, Director of RTB.

With this Understanding, Channel NewsAsia will be available to be viewed by the people of Brunei Darussalam through KRISTAL TV on UHF Channels 32 and 33 at the following times:
10am to 4pm, Monday to Thursday Midnight to 6am, Monday to Sunday
Operating with a team of 140 journalists and correspondents covering all major cities in Asia as well as key international cities, Channel NewsAsia reports on breaking news and give insights from within Asia and beyond. It is currently available in 16 territories across Asia including, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Mauritius, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates and Vietnam. Channel NewsAsia is currently offered as a digitally unencrypted, English* service via Apstar IIR and Palapa C2.

KRISTAL TV is a nationwide subscription based Pay TV in Brunei Darussalam. It is run and operated by DST Network Sdn Bhd (under the brand name KRISTAL), a broadcasting and entertainment company. KRISTAL is a subsidiary of DataStream Technology Sdn Bhd, an info-com media company in Brunei Darussalam.
KRISTAL TV began it operation on 2nd January 1999 and offers 14 TV channels to subscribers throughout Brunei Darussalam. The TV channels include RTB as a must carry channel and free-to-air. Other channels offered are based on subscriptions and are targeted to appeal to the mass market, including News and Current Affairs, Sports, Variety and Infotainment.
KRISTAL also operates free-to-air 4 channels FM radio and a DTH Service through KRISTAL-ASTRO, a joint-venture with ASTRO Malaysia offering over 50 TV and radio channels and future multimedia interactive services. Radio Television Brunei is the national broadcasting station of Brunei Darussalam. It provides both radio and television services with up-to-date and high quality programming to inform, educate and entertain.
With television service at its 27th year now, RTB is proud to fill its daily schedule with more than 65% of its outputs with locally produced programmes; These being in the forms of news, current affairs, religious, dramas, musicals, game shows, documentaries, sports, magazines and educationals. The transmission times are from 0600hrs to 1000hrs and from 1600hrs to around midnight for Mondays to Thursdays, and from 0600hrs to around midnight for Fridays to Sundays. The main news bulletins are at 2000hrs for ‘Berita Nasional’ and at 2200hrs for ‘News at Ten’.
Radio service is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year. It now offers 5 types of networks with a total of more than 90 hours of daily programming all on FM stereos and two on AM. The networks are National for the general audience, Harmoni for the family; Pelangi for the youth, Pilihan with programmes in English and Chinese, and Nur Islam with religious programmes. All these radio networks are also streamed to the net through RTB’s Netradio which can be accessed through RTB’s website.
RTB is also operating a direct-to-home digital unencrypted Satellite TV Service covering the Asia-Pacific region using the Palapa C2. Currently the transmission hours are from 0600hrs to 1000hrs and 1500hrs to 2230hrs daily.
RTB is very active in the international arena. It has established various Memoranda of Understandings with neighbouring broadcasting stations. It is also closely associated with a number of international organizations such as Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union, Commonwealth Broadcasting Association and Asia-Pacific Institute of Broadcasting. RTB also participates actively in programmes organized by the ASEAN Committee on Culture and Information (ASEAN-COCI).
